John Doyle in Concert

Overview
There are few artists in Irish music more widely respected – or more deeply woven into its sound – than John Doyle. A “musician’s musician” in the truest sense, his guitar playing, singing, and songwriting have shaped the work of some of the tradition’s most influential performers.
A founding member of Solas, Doyle has also performed with The Teetotalers and Usher’s Island, collaborating with artists including Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers, Karan Casey, Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Tim O’Brien, as well as working alongside Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny.
Raised in Dublin in a musical family, Doyle was immersed early in a wide-ranging folk tradition, drawing on influences from Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, Dick Gaughan, John Martyn, and Paul Brady, along with his father, Seán Doyle, his most important musical influence. He began performing professionally at just sixteen, co-founding Chanting House with Susan McKeown.
With Solas, Doyle toured internationally to sold-out audiences. Since then, he has become one of the most sought-after guitarists in folk and traditional music, performing with artists across Irish, folk, and bluegrass genres. His work appears on countless recordings, including Fiddler’s Green, a Grammy Award-winning project, and he has contributed to film and television soundtracks as well as composing for stage and screen. He is also a longtime featured performer on Transatlantic Sessions.
Whether accompanying others or leading his own projects, John Doyle brings a rare combination of rhythmic drive, subtlety, and deep musical understanding – qualities that have made him an essential voice in Irish music today.
