Overview
Juneteenth is an annual event, recognizing the day in 1865 that African Americans in Galveston TX were informed of their freedom via General Order #3, years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a celebration of human respect and dignity owed to African American people and their descendants, combined with hope for better days ahead.
This year’s theme is “The Journey of Four Families.” In partnership with In Black Ink, we will reveal new exhibit panels on the Rondo Commemorative Plaza that tell the history and geneaological stories of five Rondo families. More details to come.
Our planned program, including speeches from public officials and the announcement of the recipients of the Spirit of Rondo awards will last from 2-3:30 pm. Featured food vendors, exhibitors, and information tables will be found along Fisk Street.
