Win as Hard as The Lynx in Saint Paul

Win as Hard as The Lynx in Saint Paul

Whose house? Our house. Let’s go Lynx.

The three-time WNBA Champions are moving to Xcel Energy Center while construction is underway at Minneapolis’ Target Center, and we couldn’t be happier to host the Lynx in Saint Paul.

We know that this is new territory for some seasoned fans, so we hope to help you out with our guide to the Lynx in Saint Paul

Downtown

We know it: Many Lynx fans think there will be nothing going on in downtown Saint Paul. How could there be compared to Minneapolis? We get it, but don’t be shocked when there’s plenty going on pre- and post-game.

Food and Drinks

West 7th has owned the pre-party game since the Xcel Energy Center opened in 2000 with many of Saint Paul’s sports staples; Cossetta’s, Louis’, Burger Moe’s and Tom Reid’s are always popular choices before Wild games and large concerts.

Check out the other side of the arena, too. We’re pretty sure that everyone in Minnesota is familiar with Mickey’s Diner, but don’t count out the other options: there’s live jazz and Cajun food at Vieux Carre, great Halal options at Afro Deli, cask beer at Great Waters Brewing Company, elegant options at Citizen Supper Club and more.

Things to Do

If you like museums, then you’ll find plenty downtown. The Xcel Energy Center is within walking distance to the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Minnesota Children’s Museum and the Minnesota History Center.

We’d also see what’s happening at The Ordway or Park Square Theatre. The 2016-2017 show season is open for business, and you can probably pull off a quick peek in the lobbies if you don’t have time for a show (although you really should check out the great local talent that these venues attract). Make a quick stop at the Landmark Center, too; the castle-esque building is a hub for cultural and artistic events.

Hop on the Green Line

If you’re coming from Minneapolis, this is the best way to get to a game. MetroTransit’s Green Line drops you off a few blocks from the arena, and you’ll weave through some of Saint Paul’s most vibrant (and best tasting) neighborhoods.

The closest stop to the Xcel Energy Center is the Central Station and platform, located at the intersection of Cedar and 5th. Walk west on 5th; you’ll pass The Saint Paul Hotel, Rice Park and The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts on the right, and the Xcel Energy Center is just ahead. Here’s a map for reference:

Feel like exploring? There’s more to do along the Green Line--check out neighborhoods such as Lowertown, Frogtown and Little Mekong.

Lowertown

If you often find yourself in Minneapolis’ North Loop, take time before or after the Lynx game to hang out in Lowertown.

Food and Drinks

Lowertown is branded as one of the hottest dining districts in the Twin Cities, and there’s no end to the amount of food you can eat and drinks you can drink here. For outside dining, stop by Ox Cart Ale House’s rooftop, PUBLIC kitchen + bar’s streetside or Golden Deli’s artsy patio.

Newcomers to the neighborhood that you need to try include Handsome Hog and Saint Dinette; of course, show some love to longtime staples Heartland and Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar.

Things to Do

Really get your sports fix by catching a St. Paul Saints game at CHS Field. Browse through the public art at Union Depot, and check out live music at Bedlam Theatre or Mears Park

Frogtown and Little Mekong

The Green Line has made businesses and restaurants along University Avenue more accessible than ever before, and this is an easy and delicious way to get ready for game time.

Food and Drinks

There’s an endless amount of food on University, and we’re sure that you’ll find something to suit you. Feeling the fall chills? iPho by Saigon is a must-try. Want to go in for some barbecue before the game? Big Daddy’s has you covered. Need to satisfy a few tastes in your group? Silhouette Bakery and Bistro does waaay more than coffee and cupcakes--try the mock duck tacos.

Things to Do

Not only are there plenty of breweries that are close to the Green Line, but you’ll also find a handful of community centers. See what’s happening at Frogtown Farm or the Hmong Cultural Center. See a show in the intimacy of the Turf Club.

Parking in Saint Paul

Don’t pretend that parking is any worse than it is in Minneapolis--it’s just different. The RiverCentre Ramp is the quickest and easiest access to the arena. MetroTranist is the easiest option, but other parking ramps include:

Seven Corners – 150 Smith Avenue

Smith Avenue Transit Center (SATC)  – 145 Smith Avenue

Wells Fargo Center Ramp

Lawson Commons – 10 W. 6th Street

Victory Ramp – 344 N. Wabasha Street

405 Minnesota Street

56 E. 6th Street

411 Cedar Street

326 Minnesota Street

Looking to stay longer? Stay the night in a hotel room.

We can’t wait to see you around. Make sure to share all of your Lynx pride with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #MYSAINTPAUL. Go Lynx!
